AnIML Workshop "Applying the Analytical Information Markup Language (AnIML)"
at PittCon 2007 in Chicago, IL
Abstract:Over the past four years, members of ASTM Subcommittee E13.15 on Analytical Data in collaboration with members of the IUPAC CPEP Subcommittee on Electronic Data Standards have created a new data interchange and archiving format known as the Analytical Information Markup Language (AnIML). Based on XML (Extensible Markup Language), AnIML provides a way to capture, represent, and organize analytical result data and metadata from any analytical technique in a form consistent and usable with modern networking technologies. AnIML is built around a generic data container called the AnIML Core that is constrained for a given analytical technique by a Standard Technique Definition. Technique Definition Extension documents permit augmentation of AnIML to accommodate additional vendor modifications, enterprise requirements, and user needs. Once the data are in AnIML format, they can be transformed into other formats using standard XML tools and examined using XML data viewers. Since metadata are included along with result data, it is possible to create generic viewers that can visualize any AnIML dataset from a single application. Built-in digital signatures, validation, verification, and data-tracking schemes ensure the document and data integrity necessary for using AnIML in regulated industries.
This Symposium will begin by describing AnIML-how it was designed, how it works, and what it looks like. Subsequent presentations will show how AnIML can be used in a variety of environments to solve pressing data interchange and archiving problems while ensuring the integrity of the data and facilitating compliance with regulatory requirements. Additional information may be found on the AnIML website animl.sourceforge.net.
